Sectoral Plan for Adaptation to Climate Change in the Forestry and Agricultural Sector came into effect
The Sectoral Plan for Climate Change Adaptation in the Forestry and Agricultural Sector came into effect on December 11. Upon the publication in the Diario Oficial of Decree No. 16, dated July 23, 2024, of the Ministry of Agriculture. This plan aims to reduce the environmental, social, and economic vulnerability of forestry and agricultural producers and their production systems, and capitalize on the opportunities presented by climate change.
These objectives may consider territorial, intercultural, and gender perspectives, and incorporate nature-based solutions.
Thanks to the ongoing updates and monitoring by an associate at VGC Abogados, Pablo Garrido, concerning this important matter, we highlight that this plan specifically aims to:
– Incorporate practices, management techniques, and methods to reduce the vulnerability of agricultural production systems.
-Increase efficient use and availability of water resources for forestry and agricultural production by implementing methods to capture and store water on farms, regulating water resources, and optimizing irrigation techniques and technologies.
-Conserve, restore, and sustainably use natural resources to provide ecosystem services that surround producers.
-Increase and upgrade farm production equipment and infrastructure.
– Reduce the information and technological gap for producers, improving the management of agrometeorological risks.
To achieve these objectives, the plan considers implementing actions such as:
-Promote the construction of seawater desalination plants and wastewater and greywater treatment systems.
-Promote the connection of fragmented forested areas and restore them with native species in areas affected by forest fires.
-Design a National Incentive Program for the Recovery of Important Ecosystems.
-Launch ecosystem restoration processes.
-Create watercourse protection zones by establishing native forest cover.
-Promote the reuse and value of agricultural and forestry residue.
Nevertheless, developing these or any other measures outlined in this plan requires the enactment and modification of other regulations, the creation of management and coordination bodies, among other enabling conditions concerning this relevant industry.
